Companies are facing the joy and angst of today’s BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) trend. Employees who enjoy the latest tablets, air-books, and hand-held devices are bringing them into work at an ever-increasing rate. The benefits for both the employer and employee are immediately obvious; the employer reduces their hardware costs and the employee works in their comfort zone.

All benefits aside, the potential nightmares become quickly apparent. How often have you read an article about an employee who had their laptop, containing personnel’s social security numbers, stolen from their car? Or your companies confidential customer list or the code to your new, and proprietary app?

So how can a business protect the company’s data if their employees are using their personal devices and using them outside the office?

One word of advice: don’t let your employees download this data to their laptops. 2300 NASA employees learned this the hard way when a HR employee had her laptop stolen from her car parked outside her home. Unfortunately, her laptop contained their Social Security numbers along with other personal information.

Imagine what else could be in that laptop? Valuable and confidential customer information? Designs for your latest product? Your company’s accounts receivables?
